How is shilajit obtained?

Shilajit forms on the rocks of the Himalayan mountains as a result of the decomposition of plants and other organic matter on them. It takes several thousand years for this shilajit to form. It is dark in color and has a tar-like texture.

Once the rocks that bear this shilajit have been obtained, the shilajit needs to be purified before it becomes safe for consumption. So, here is how shilajit is obtained and purified.

- After the shilajit rocks have been obtained, they are then soaked in a huge vessel containing water for about 48 hours.
- After the shilajit is completely immersed in water for 48 hours, the rocks present in it dissolve and form a thick paste.
- Some more water is added to this thick paste to dilute it and then the entire mixture is heated.
- After heating, the rocks need to be filtered out from the actual shilajit. So, for this process, a sieve is used which separates the rocks from the shilajit. This process is carried out a few times so that the rocks and shilajit are completely separated.
- After this, a decoction of triphala is added to the pure shilajit.
- At this stage, the shilajit still has water content. So, to remove it, it is again heated.
- After this whole process is complete, what remains is thick and 100% shilajit.
