Kashmiri Saffron: The King of Spices

Since its discovery thousands of years ago, saffron (Buy Saffron Online) has been treasured for its ultimate flavor and beautiful golden-red color. It isn’t just widely used

in various special delicacies but also as a natural color, dye and its use in medicines is also prevalent. Known as the most expensive spice in the world, saffron majorly

grows in India, Iran, Spain and Greece. Even though Iran constitutes  the majority of saffron grown in the world, Kashmiri saffron is popular for being the most supreme

quality. You can buy the topmost quality Kashmiri saffron online.

Iranian Saffron vs. Kashmiri Saffron:

What sets the Kashmiri saffron apart from the Iranian saffron is its length and color. Kashmiri saffron threads are often quite long as compared to the Iranian saffron

threads. They also have a thick head and a very deep red color. Another distinguishing factor can be the price point. Iranian saffron is almost half the price of Kashmiri saffron.

With these, you can easily tell the two apart. However, sometimes this too can get difficult as importers often mix different saffron strands to export it to countries where

saffron does not grow. This is mostly done to fill the gap between the two drastic price points. Hence, you must only buy pure Kashmiri saffron online from trusted vendors.

Types of Kashmiri Saffron:

Basically, Kashmiri saffron is of three types: Mongra, Lacha and Zarda. If you are wondering how all three of these are different, here’s how:

  1. Mongra Saffron:

Saffron is actually the stigma of a flower called ‘crocus sativus’ or the saffron flower. This flower is purple colored and in the middle of each flower, there are three

red-colored stigmas. These stigmas are attached to the saffron flowers with pale yellow filaments that are known as ‘styles’. When the style is removed from the

stigma, the resultant kind of saffron is called the ‘Mongra’ saffron. The Mongra saffron is the highest quality of Kashmiri saffron and has a deep red color.

  1. Lacha Saffron:

This is the second highest quality of saffron found in Kashmir. In this variety of saffron, the style is only partially removed from the stigma. Meaning, each stigma

has a little part of style attached to it. This kind of saffron has red threads with small yellow tails.

  1. Zarda Saffron:

This is the lowest quality of saffron and definitely not the purest. It is also quite cheap as compared to its counterparts. The Zarda saffron is nothing but the

‘style’ of the stigma. The ‘yellow tail’ at the end of the stigma of a saffron flower is what makes this variety of saffron.

If you are wondering which variety of saffron to go for, the answer is always Mongra saffron. Even though it is expensive, it is definitely worth its price. Its beautiful

red strands can transform any dish and add a rich taste to it. Its vibrant deep red color is also incomparable with other varieties of saffron. To save yourself from

buying fake strands, buy authentic Kashmiri saffron online.
